4 Tips for Dealing with Humidity in your Hair
If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, humidity is not your friend. There’s nothing more aggravating than walking outside on a hot, humid summer day and having your hair turn into a frizzy mess before you even get to work.
If you’re a science geek, you’ll be excited to know that the reason your hair gets curlier is because the more water is in the air, the more hydrogen bonds are formed between the proteins in your hair, causing the strands to curl up on themselves.
Janet Lazar, one of our hairstylists here at Robert Gold Salon & Spa, says there’s no point trying to fight science.
“You can’t fight nature,” Janet says. “It’s not about controlling the frizz, it’s about going with the flow.”
That means if you have wavy or curly hair, don’t bother trying to blow dry it or straighten it. Instead, embrace your curls. Here are a few anti-frizz hair tips for the humidity:
- Don’t wash too often: Washing and drying your hair actually dries it out, which causes frizz. Avoid frequent washes, and when you do wash, make sure to use conditioner.
- Keep your hair hydrated: Although it may seem counter-intuitive, one way to prevent frizz is to make sure your hair is fully hydrated so it doesn’t react to humidity. Think of a sponge. If you have one that’s dry and you put it in water, it will expand, but if you have one that’s already wet and put it in water, it will stay the same shape and won’t react to the water around it.
When you do wash your hair, use a shampoo that will lock in moisture, such as Bumble and Bumble’s Crème de Coco shampoo. You can even rinse it with organic coconut oil, which is a deep, intense moisturizer.
- Don’t blow dry: Blow drying only removes humidity from your hair, which makes it more susceptible to the humidity when you step outside. Instead, apply an anti-frizz masque or smoothing cream, such as Eschuen’s Olive Instant Treatment, after you shower to keep your hair moisturized all day long. Let your hair air dry, then apply a holding agent, such as a mousse or a gel, to keep your hair in place when the wind blows.
- Maintain on the go: To fight the humidity throughout the day, tuck a travel-sized bottle of anti-frizz oil or spray shine in your purse and apply whenever you hair starts to frizz up again. We like Bumble & Bumble’s Invisible Oil or Bumble & Bumble’s Spray Shine for a quick pick-me-up.
